How often should my carpets be cleaned?

Good question and one we are often asked.  The short answer and the one recommended by most carpet manufactories is, at least once a year. More frequent cleaning are needed if you have kids and/or pets. For a longer explanation with EPA guides and other info click here. In fact, your carpet manufactories warranty may require yearly cleaning and carpet protectant reapplied to satisfy their requirements of proper care. (kind 'a like tires having to be rotated and balanced every 5-7000 miles to maintain tread wear warranty...)

How long will it take for carpets to dry before I can walk on them?
You can walk on damp carpets at anytime. (Please, Be careful, Carpet can be slippery especially on stairs and going from carpeted to hard floors.) We recommend not walking on freshly cleaned carpet for a couple of  hours to allow time to dry. Using our drying fans, on the Value and Premium level packages, can help reduce the time needed for drying. Running any ceiling fans helps speed drying times as well.

On the Premium Package, we use state of the art "glided" cleaning wands that extract 98% of the moisture so drying times can run in the 1 to 2 hrs* range. For other packages week info for that package to get dry times.

In addition, we will leave you a pair of "booties" for you to use in case you need to move around on slightly damp carpet. The booties prevent shoe stains on damp carpet. They are reusable so be sure to keep them in a drawer and use next time we clean for you. :) "Booties, professional spotter bottle, refrigerator magnet, brochures referral cards and much more do we leave with you.". (as said by Yoda from StarWars.).. LOL

*
Drying times are dependent on air movement and RH % at time is cleaning and if carpet protection is applied. Actual times may vary.

What cleaning method do you use?

While there are several different methods of  carpet cleaning and we are experienced in most all of them. The best method depends on type of carpet you have, amount of soil present and what are your overall expectations. We recommend HWE (hot water extraction) method, commonly referred to as "steam cleaning". This method uses a very hot (210 deg) cleaning solution sprayed at pressures from 200 - 500 PSI depending on the type of carpet, length of pile and other factors we check during our carpet inspection. Most residential carpets are best cleaned with HWE (Hot Water Extraction) method, since it's the recommend method of cleaning by Shaw Industries,  one of the largest manufactures of carpet. Click here to read more on Shaw's website. Other manufactures that recommends HWE  include, Stainmaster, Salem Carpets, Beaulieu, and others. Click here for larger list of carpet manufactures and the cleaning method they recommend.

Other cleaning methods are: Bonnet cleaning, Dry Foam, Semi-Dry Chemical Compound, Absorbent Pad,  Shampoo and the latest is VLM (Very Low Moisture) Encapsulation Method.  Each method has it pro's and cons. Speaking of dryer vents, how often should they be cleaned?
Most dryer vents should be cleaned at least every two years or so. This depends on the length of your vent and how often the dryer is used weekly. Dryers that have short vent runs and little usage may be able to go longer than normal before needing cleaned.

Cleaning the dryer vent can help prevent the possibility of a fire in your house or dangerous carbon monoxide, in the case of a gas fired dryer. Plus, it can save you money on electricity or gas cost. A clean vent allows the dryer to do a better job,  allowing your clothes to dry quicker with less energy consumed. Take time to notice if your dryer seems to be running longer with the same amount of clothes, it may be time to have the vent cleaned. And, with all the talk about power shortages and high energy cost,  we all must do our part and make sure all our appliances are operating at peak efficiency.

Some other ways of saving energy is to set your A/C cooling temp at 77 or 78 degrees instead of 74 or lower, and during heating season try 68 instead of 70. Use a set back thermostat that adjust temps up or down when you are not home. You won't notice the difference till the electric or gas bill comes. (If you need help figuring out how to spend all the money you saved give me a call... :)  I try to hang clothes out on nice days to get the FREE drying provide by Mr. Sun. I figure some thing in life are free, you just have to take advantage of them....another good idea is a programmable set back thermostat., It allows the temp to go into economy mode when you are not home saving 15-20% or more on energy costs. check Lowes,  HomeDepot or online for models and more info..
climbing down off my soap box now......

We often see the white flexible vinyl type vent coming out the back of 90% of dryers we service. This type of material can be highly flammable and creates dangerous fumes when burning. If the lint catches on fire while the dryer is running it can blow flames into the vent pipe catching the vinyl connector between the dryer and wall on fire. It can also blow flaming balls of lint around in the area where the dryer sits and behind the sheetrock behind the dryer which causing the fire to spread faster. Hopefully,  you catch it soon enough and the Fire Dept gets there in time to keep the damage to a minimum. The washer / dryer area is one place we recommend putting a smoke detector to give a early warning about smoke or fire in this area. Also have a good A,B,C type fire extinguisher (like the one you see in Lowes etc.)  handy in case you need one quick. That can be the difference between you knocking down a small fire or having the house burn down.

We can replace the old vinyl dryer vent material with the new flame resistant silver UL listed flex material. .

Pricing for dryer vent cleaning starts at $125 for one story house and $135 for 2 story and includes up to 25 ft of vent. Other guys give a low price but for only 5-6 ft of vent then charge you $200 or so for the other 15 feet..
If the dryer is on bottom floor of home and vents out down low this is considered a one story price.

Installing flame resistant dryer vent hose run $1.50 per foot from dryer to wall in laundry room.

In addition, we are equipped to completely replace an old unsafe vent system with new rigid sheet metal vents or metal flexible vents where needed in most cases. Call Chimney Keepers at 919-772-8110 today and get your dryer vent system cleaned.

If you are a first time client, we like to have someone home to show us around the areas that need cleaning and  if we have questions about any stains, spots or seam problems. Before we start the cleaning process, we perform a 7 Point-Carpet Inspection to address any concerns you may have and get an idea of overall carpet condition and age. We are friendly, uniformed, honest, certified, licensed, insured and bonded professionals you can trust in your home. I have seen ad's for a "Dry Cleaning" method. Is this a good method to use?
As was mentioned earlier, most major carpet manufacturers recommend and some now require HWE hot water extraction , (aka,Steam Cleaning) as their preferred method of cleaning. Much like washing your hair you rinse out the soap before drying, HWE cleaning is highly effective in removing soil and other contaminants from your carpet using the flushing of water rinsing agents and extraction with a powerful vacuum system. It is one of five carpet cleaning processes that are officially recognized as an industry standard.

To most people "dry cleaning" means cleaning without water. The fact is, most carpet cleaning advertised as "Dry" cleaning actually uses anywhere from a little, to a lot, of water! Some companies use a white powder materials that is sprinkled on the carpet and worked in with a brush machine. The material supposedly absorbs the soil and is vacuumed away.  For the majority of residential customers HWE or "steam cleaning"  will deliver the most effective results being its the method recommend by the largest carpet manufactures.

Each process can be effective depending on the circumstances. For those who prefer a dry cleaning process, and for most commercial carpets,  Absolute Best Carpet Care offers a Very Low Moisture cleaning system. This system is a unique and effective encapsulation process that delivers excellent cleaning results with minimum water use and is environmentally sensitive and child and pet safe. Drying times are brief with an average of 10 mins to 30 mins. Your carpets will be clean, bright and usable in a short amount of time. In addition, they will stay cleaner looking longer.

What is your procedure for cleaning carpets?

We have a 10+ step process that is used on each job to make sure the cleaning is done consistently and  correctly because we want to impress you, our client.

When we first arrive at your home we check the driveway for safe access and if possible park near front or side entrance. We carry a special door baffle that helps keep the weather and bugs out during hot or cold weather cleaning.

  1. Pre-Cleaning Carpet Inspection: Before the cleaning process is started, we like to talk with client about any area's of concern and inspect carpet to determine type and level of soil present. At this time we go over service packages and reaffirm any pricing. Upholstery cleaning and Carpet Protectant application is address to see if client is interested in these services if not included in package pricing.

  2. Pre-vacuum: Depending on level of service requested, we thoroughly vacuum the carpet to remove loose soil and other debris before cleaning. On the Economy package levels the home owner is responsible for pre-vacuuming before our arrival.

  3. Pre-condition: Pre-condition treating of high traffic areas with special High Quality emulsifier agents to help carpet fibers release and suspend soils and dirt from everyday usage.

  4. Agitation: Depending on soil level after applying precondition spray, if needed we use a rake or special carpet machine to help cleaning agent reach all parts of the carpet fiber while giving it a good scrub to loosen the soil.  Pre-conditioning agents are usually allowed to dwell for 10-15 mins while they work loosing the dirt, soils and pollutants in the carpet.

  5. Extraction Rinse: After precondition and agitation steps,  the carpet is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed with HWE equipment which injects a high quality hot water cleaning and rinsing agents into carpets, rinsing  soils, dirt, dust mites, pollens and other pollutants out of the carpet. This stuff is removed with our high power truck mounted vacuum extraction system and deposited in waste water tank in vehicle outside the home. Getting the bad stuff out of your life.. now that good..

  6. Remove remaining spot & stains: After thoroughly cleaning  we inspect for any remaining spot or stains focusing on removing them from your carpet if possible. Most come up, some don't..that's a stain.

  7. Groom: After we are satisfied with the cleaning and spot removal, we may fluff the carpet with special grooming rake to help carpet fiber stand straight looking like it did when new.. We also feel the carpet to determine softness and dampness levels. Any furniture moved during cleaning is placed on protective pads or foam blocks to prevent staining the carpet. (depending on package level of cleaning)

  8. Protectant: Depending on service package selected, we apply protectant to carpet and/or upholstery after cleaning.

  9. Dry: Depending on service package selected, we can use special drying fans to speed up the drying process

  10. Forward Scheduling: After all the hoses and tools are put away we sit down with the client to make sure they are happy with the job, go over any protectant warranties, explain the "Buy 4 Get The 5th Free" programs,  schedule a return cleaning date, fill out invoice and collect payment.

We get positive comments from clients about not having to worry about calling to schedule carpet cleaning with our Forward Scheduling Service. We make a note of the date desired and add that to our service calendar for your future cleaning date. A postcard and/or phone call is make in advance of appointment to reaffirm the date and determine good time.
A magnetic business card is placed on refrigerator and information packet is left for reading later.  A friendly "Thanks & Good Day" and we are off to next great client to make their carpets look like new. :).. Why should we choose Absolute Best Carpet Care to clean our carpets?

Because we are true-Professionals. Carpet cleaning may seem pretty straight forward, but that's not the case with all the different types of carpet, upholstery materials and cleaning agents available on the market today. You have to know the chemistry and understand how different cleaning agents work on soil and stains on carpet fibers. Carpet cleaning today is very different than it was 30 years ago. Shampoo was the best cleaning method around and man did it leave a soapy residue in the carpet. That why most people still believe that cleaning your carpet makes it get dirty faster. With the advances in cleaning agents we have today carpets stay cleaner looking longer. The cleaning products we use are the latest technology called encapsulation cleaners. In addition,  the carpet fiber itself has changed. [Did you know since 1950's nylon carpets have changed composition 7 or more times?] We continually attend training classes to keep up with new cleaning technologies and cleaning agents that emerge.

We don't try to lure you in with super low prices and false claims like the bait and switch operators do. We will provide you a firm quote and stand by that price. Protect your self against uneducated, uninformed, and down right unscrupulous carpet cleaners by only dealing with companies you can trust. That's why we have joined National and local carpet cleaners associations to put us in contact with other professionals who also operated their business in an honest and ethical manner.  In addition we are fully insured, bonded, certified, licensed, knowledgeable, honest, hard working and conduct our business with the highest integrity.  Plus, you will love our Friendly, Uniformed and Highly Trained Technicians.  Discover the difference and experience truly clean, fresh carpet. What brand of carpet protectant do you use and why?
We exclusively use  Dupont Teflon Advanced Carpet Protectant.  That's the brand used most often by the major carpet manufactures in their mills.  Protectant will wear off during normal foot traffic and during routine cleaning. Just like the wax on a car it has to reapplied to maintain a fresh new look. Carpet protectant should be reapplied after cleaning to seal any scratches in the carpet fiber and help prevent dulling and provide protection from stains.  In addition, we are a Certified & Trained Technician for Dupont Teflon Advance products.  For a good question and answer section on Dupont's website about protectant, click here.

Will the backing of my carpet get wet during cleaning?
No, during the cleaning process hot water is injected into the carpet fibers rinsing the carpet helping to remove all the sand, dust mites, pollen, dirt and other contaminants. Much of the moisture is removed by the powerful truck mount vacuum system and state of the art cleaning equipment we employ so the carpet is left slightly damp to the touch. Most carpets are dry in 1 - 5 hrs depending on carpet type, humidity and air movement.

What is "filtration" soiling. (the dark unsightly line around baseboards and under doorways)
Its most noticeable with light colored carpet, you may see dark lines around baseboards, under doors, on edge of stairs and especially near the HVAC return. This type of soiling is the result ts most noticeable with light colored carpet, you may see dark lines around baseboards, under doors, on edge of stairs and especially near the HVAC return. This type of soiling is the result of air passing through the carpet as it goes under closed doors and through the edge of the carpet pile. The microscopic particles of dirt, air borne grease and pollution are deposited along this line hence the name "Filtration Soiling". This process can occur over a long period of time before it becomes noticeable. By that time there is quite a buildup of soil.

Filtration Soiling is very difficult to remove due to the fact the particles of soil & pollution are so small and fine they penetrate deep into the carpet pile and in some cases of severe soiling the carpet backing can be can be stained as well. Can the lines be removed?? With special filtration line cleaning products, time and good amount of effort, 'reasonable" results are possible. It depends on level of soils present and build up. We can give you a price on cleaning, just ask us anytime we are cleaning.

How can I prevent these filtration lines?? Be sure to vacuum the edge where the carpet and baseboard meet. You can use a crevice tool or just a regular dusting brush on vacuum hose end. Also using a clean damp towel and wipe will help as well. Be careful of tackstrips as they can nick your fingers. Also, make sure your A/C filters are of good quality and change often during heating or cooling seasons.

I have heard that if you have allergies you should remove all the carpet in your home. Is that true??

In 1973, based on anecdotal evidence that carpet contributed to allergic reactions, the Swedish government banned the used of carpet in all public facilities. Carpet was replaced with hard surface flooring materials in homes, commercial environments, schools, government buildings. Carpet fell from approximately 20% of the market share to less than 2% of the total flooring market share during that time.

Follow-up studies by the Swedish Central Statistics Bureau indicated a dramatic increase in reported allergies by the Swedish population following carpet replacement. As carpet was removed and hard surface flooring was installed, the incidence of allergy increased among the Swedish population. This alarming increase was in direct proportion to the amount of hard flooring materials installed. This ban was removed after 17 years when the dramatic increase in allergic reactions was confirmed.

In recent years, numerous investigations have begun to question the practice of avoidance and began to look at routes of exposure for allergens that are impossible to avoid. Researchers understand that allergic reactions are caused by exposure to specific allergens, but these respiratory allergens typically must be inhaled or ingested to produce a respiratory response.

Dust mite allergen has been a concern since its initial discovery as a primary allergen in the 1960’s. Allergists routinely test for mite allergen sensitivity and historical data reveals that a significant number of their patients reveal a low tolerance to this allergen. However, allergists stop short of stating that allergic reactions have been caused by a specific allergen, because of an inability to trace reactions to a specific cause.
